Which level?
Churchill House offers London Chamber of Commerce & Industry Examination courses at three levels:
LEVEL 1 (Elementary)
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENT
The entrance test requires you to have a mid-intermediate level of English. Although it is useful to have some business background it is not necessary for enrolment at this level.
EXAMINATIONS which you may take at this level:
Level 1 - English for Commerce
Level 1 is just below the level of the Cambridge First Certificate Examination. The examination lasts 2 hours and includes: a 200 word composition; reading comprehension; 100 word business letter.
Threshold Level - Spoken English for Industry and Commerce
The examination lasts 30 minutes and includes: a general conversation; a description and discussion of photographs; a role play; a reading and listening comprehension test.
(There is also a Preliminary level for weaker students who wish to take the Spoken English for Industry and Commerce exam.)
LEVEL 2 (Intermediate)
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENT
The entrance test requires you to have an upper intermediate level of English plus some knowledge of business concepts and terminology. A pass at Level 1 in the English for Commerce exam secures automatic entry to the Level 2 examination course.
EXAMINATIONS which you may take at this level:
Level 2 - English for Commerce
Level 2 is mid-way between the levels of the Cambridge First Certificate and Proficiency examinations. The written examination lasts 2 1/2 hours and includes: 300 word composition; 120 word summary; 150-200 word business letter. This exam also has an oral component which is covered in the Intermediate Level examination in Spoken English for Industry and Commerce.
Intermediate Level - Spoken English for Industry and Commerce
This examination lasts 35 minutes and includes: a general conversation (The English for Commerce oral examination); a listening comprehension; a role-play; a reading exercise.
LEVEL 3 (Higher)
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENT
The entrance test requires a student to have an advanced level of English approaching Proficiency level, plus a wide commercial or industrial background. A pass at Level 2 in the English for Commerce exam secures automatic entry to the Level 3 examination course.
EXAMINATIONS which you may take at this level:
Level 3 - English for Commerce
Level 3 is just above the level of the Cambridge Proficiency examination. The written examination lasts 3 hours and includes: 400 word essay; 180 word summary; a business letter. This exam also has an oral component which is covered in the Advanced Level examination in Spoken English for Industry and Commerce.
Advanced - Spoken English for Industry and Commerce
This examination lasts 50 minutes and includes: a general conversation (The English for Commerce oral examination); a listening comprehension; a summary; a discussion on a special subject chosen by the candidate and prepared in advance.
