Your work placement
Having improved your English at Churchill House both inside and outside the classroom, you are now ready to start your Work Placement. Some placements are located in Ramsgate or nearby towns, others are within 30 kilometres (Dover, Ashford, Canterbury...) and a few are in or around London. In the case of very special professional requirements, a placement may be offered at a greater distance. A Work Placement normally lasts from 4 to 12 weeks, although longer periods are possible. Most students on Work Experience Programmes are aged from 20 to 29, although some are considerably older ¬ the minimum age is 18. Exactly what you do during your Work Placement is dependent on the depth of your previous professional experience, but as well as taking part in the day to day activity of the workplace you may be involved in specific projects. Your work is unpaid and you normally have to pay for any necessary travel expenses to and from the workplace. Most organisations expect you to work from 9.00 to 17.30 although occasionally it might be necessary to work during the evenings or at weekends. You need to wear suitable clothing: in most British organisations it is normal for men to wear a suit and tie and women to wear smart clothes. During the first week of your Work Placement one of our counsellors contacts your supervisor in case there are any initial problems and to ensure a smooth transition to the workplace. Your progress is monitored, so if there are any problems or queries we are in a position to act immediately to resolve them together. However, your supervisor has their own job to do and may not always be able to monitor your work all the time. Self-motivation is therefore most important! If your standard of work, attitude or attendance is not considered adequate to allow progress, you may, after consultation, be requested to leave the organisation. In such cases we will try to find an alternative, but cannot guarantee to do so. |
