Summer recruitment FAQs
Please review below our frequently asked questions
How long are the contracts with Churchill House?
There are a variety of contract lengths with Churchill House. The shortest contract is 4 weeks and the longest would be 8 weeks.
I have recently completed my CELTA/Teaching Qualification, can I still apply?
Yes. Churchill House can be a great start for newly qualified EFL Teachers. You will be supported by a Director of Studies and also a roving Area Director of Studies and Training Manager. Through your time with Churchill House you will be supported by the Academic Management team and given the opportunity for feedback and to attend Teacher Training sessions as well as Teachers meetings. You will also be able to follow our syllabus and have full use of materials whilst you are employed. For a typical day in the life of an EFL Teacher in the summer please visit the Working at Churchill House section.
Do I need to complete an application form?
Yes. All sections must be completed in full (including a full employment history, with gaps in employment accounted for e.g. unemployment). Please also send a copy of your CV, copies of your certificates, and a photo to be used on your ID card if you are successful.
Who can I put down as referees?
We will need the details of at least two professional referees, preferably those who can be contacted with regard to your suitability to work with children. One of them should be your current or previous employer or college tutor. We are unable to accept character references, or references from friends or family. We will need their full contact details- first name and surname, address, telephone number, fax and e-mail address. It is possible that we will contact referees prior to your interview; please make sure they are aware we have their details. If you are in any doubts please contact our recruitment manager.
What happens once you have received my application?
If you are successful we will contact you either by phone or email, within two weeks of receiving your application. Interviews are usually conducted by telephone and last approximately 30-45 minutes. You will be contacted by our Recruitment Manager and they usually take place from January - June. If you do not hear from us within this time, please assume that on this occasion your application has been unsuccessful.
What happens following my interview?
If you are successful at interview you will receive a contract pack usually within 10 days of receiving a verbal offer. Please read the offer letter carefully and return all documents enclosed. If you receive a Disclosure Scotland/CRB application form please complete and return with the relevant original ID documents. If you are in any doubt please contact our recruitment manager.
What happens prior to me arriving for work at the centre?
You will be contacted by telephone by a member of the on site management team 2-3 days prior to your start date (please ensure you provide a valid telephone number as part of your application pack). If you have not heard from a member of the on-site team 1 day prior to arrival, please contact our Recruitment Manager.
When do I arrive at the summer centre?
If you are a residential member of staff, you will usually be expected to arrive up to 3 days prior to the commencement of your contract. If you are a non-residential member of staff please discuss your arrival with the on-site staff.
How/when will I be paid?
All Churchill House employees are paid into a UK bank account only. We do not pay in cash. Our payroll is weekly. It is your responsibility to have a UK account which we can pay into. It is the individual’s responsibility to complete and return the bank details form and the correct tax form and return them with your contract. If you are in doubt as to which tax form to complete please visit www.hrmc.gov.uk for further details.
What is included in residential positions?
Facilities vary from centre to centre, please discuss with our Recruitment Manager the facilities available at the centres you are interested in. Please note that staff are not always guaranteed single rooms. You will be provided with 3 meals a day at times given at each centre.
What do I need to bring?
Teachers need to bring their original teaching certificates and degree certificates with them to the centre. All staff must have their passports (showing valid work permit, if applicable) and any other relevant certificates (e.g. first aid). Teachers are welcome to bring their own materials to supplement the existing syllabus though there is a library of teaching books available at each centre.
Are travel costs to the centre covered?
If you are a new member of staff we are unable to reimburse you with travel costs to the centre. However, if you are a returning member of staff, we will reimburse you up to a certain amount for your travel within England to the centre.
