Director of Studies

The Director of Studies in Churchill House Summer Centres is a key management position, not only in the effective implementation of the academic programme, but in supporting the centre manager in the overall smooth running of the centre.  All Directors of Studies ideally have:

• An RSA CELTA or Trinity Cert TESOL.
• Extensive teaching experience and
• Evidence of effective management experience.
• In all but exceptional cases an RSA DELTA/Trinity Licentiate Diploma in TESOL.  Or an MA in ELT or applied linguistics
• Previous residential summer school experience
• Strong organisational skills
• Flexibility

Hours of Work

Directors of Studies work six days out of seven. The nature of the job requires Churchill House Centre Managers to be flexible and willing to address situations whenever they arise.

Training

It is a prerequisite of the position that all Directors of Studies attend the Management Training Weekend starting on Friday 30th June.  (Accommodation will be paid for and reasonable travel costs will be reimbursed). 

Duties

The Director of Studies is responsible to the Centre Manager and must;

• Implement and monitor the academic programme
• Support and manage the teaching staff
• Manage the testing and placement in classes of new arrivals
• Carry out Lesson Observation and feed back
• Induction of new teachers
• INSET sessions as required
• Ensure appropriate standards of student discipline are maintained
• Keep records of class attendance and scheme of work
• Deal sensitively with enquires on classes and levels
• Hold regular teachers meetings
• Ensure British Council guidelines are observed
• Teach to provide cover for absent / ill teachers

Other Duties

• Assist Centre Manager in running the centre as and when required
• Help and welcome new arrivals
• Assist with House, morning and night time duties
• Have an awareness of all aspects of the management of the centre
• Assist with welfare and pastoral duties
• Stand in for the Centre Manager when required
