Attendance and behaviour

Churchill House is committed to providing an environment in which all students feel comfortable, confident and able to learn.

As such we have certain rules of behaviour and procedures which must be met.

Attendance

We expect all students to attend every class unless they have a very good reason not to, in which case we expect them out of politeness to inform their teacher or Course Director in advance or phone in if they are ill. Students who are absent for two days in a week, without good reason will be invited to talk to the Course Director about any problems they are having. A persistent pattern of absence would be dealt with more strongly via warning letters and exclusion from particular classes or courses and, as a final resort, exclusion from the school. Any other pattern of behaviour which might adversely affect your learning environment and progress or that of your fellow students would be dealt with in the same way. Firstly, by discussion with your teacher, then with your course director and finally by the head of department. While making every effort to understand the underlying cause of such behaviour the right of every student to enjoy the best possible classroom experience is paramount. Notices about the expected attendance are in every classroom.

Bullying and harassment

Churchill House regards all forms of harassment and bullying as unacceptable whether from students, group leaders or staff. Bullying or harassing behaviour can be defined as abuse involving mental, physical or verbal actions which, either by individuals or groups, are intended to intimidate or exploit others, and which, by a reasonable person, would be seen as unacceptable behaviour in an educational environment and workplace. If you feel that you are in any way being bullied or intimidated by another student, either in your class or in your host family or a member of staff, you should tell someone immediately. You can call into the Accommodation Office or Social Club at any time and have a confidential chat.

Disciplinary policy for students

If students are found to be involved in bullying and harassment then action will be taken:

  1. In the first instance they will be spoken to by their class teacher and informed that they must cease such behaviour. If the behaviour continues, the teacher will report the matter to the Course Director or Academic Principal who will call the student/s in and talk to them. (If the student is part of a group, then the group leader will be informed). At this meeting the individual/s involved will be informed that if their behaviour continues more serious action will be taken.
  2. Further action may take the form of excluding them from class for short periods (sin bin) or for the rest of the day/a day and giving them grammar exercises to do instead (under observation in the Teaching department).
  3. Continued unacceptable behaviour may result in removal from class for longer periods. At this stage parents or the agent will be informed that another recurrence will lead to expulsion at their expense.
  4.  The final course of action will be expulsion from the school.
