  Teaching

You can choose between 2, 3, and 4 weeks courses (additional weeks are possible) with starting dates throughout the summer.

All courses have 15 hours lessons per week although 20 and 25 hour courses are also available. All our summer students benefit from the knowledge and expertise of our permanent professional teaching staff. At Churchill House staff training is a priority throughout the year and this allows us to maintain the high standards of our modern and dynamic teaching department.

Small classes; a wide range of levels

We run three separate courses carefully designed to meet the needs of the different age groups but our aim is always to make your stay with us effective and enjoyable. Our teachers are professional and enthusiastic, helping you to learn as much useful English as possible.

Each summer we welcome students from over 60 different countries so you learn in truly international surroundings. Classes are small (average 12 maximum 15) and cover a wide range of levels. You are tested on or before arrival and an interview with your Course Director ensures you are placed at the correct level for your abilities.

Finding your level

If you are a Junior or Young Adult student following a course with 15 lessons per week, you will be given a written test on arrival at the school on registration day which is always a Sunday so you can go straight to your class on Monday morning.

If you are an Adult student (or a Young Adult following a 20 hour course) you will be sent a written test to complete and return to us for marking before you arrive and will also have an interview with the Course Director on registration day. Based on this information, the Course Director will place you in the most appropriate class for your level of English knowledge

Motivating lessons

Our lessons motivate you by using a wide range of language activities designed above all to improve your ability to communicate fluently.

During the summer our classes for each age group are divided into 4 main levels of ability: Elementary, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced and are further sub-divided within these levels. Whatever your age group, you will be placed in a small class with between 10 and 15 students of similar age and ability to yourself. Your lessons are designed to be motivating and stimulating to encourage you to learn and practise the maximum amount of English. You will learn better communication, improve your listening and pronunciation skills and also practise your reading and writing with materials and activities specifically adapted to your age group and level of knowledge.

Your teachers continuously monitor your progress and at the end of your course you receive a certificate showing the progress you have made and the level you have achieved.
